Olive, Big Valley HAPPENINGS AROUND MILLS COUNTY - CURRENT EVENTS MILLS COUNTY BOTANICAL GARDEN & NATIVE AMERICAN MUSEUM Great plans for a botanic garden are being made. A new complex is the first priority. This will house a native American museum consisting of a large display of Indian artifacts. Consisting of offices, classrooms, space for working with horticulture, and a horticulture library. An additional feature will be a conservatory showcasing the plants that grow in a rain forest. A tea room and gift shop are also included. To emphasize the rich heritage of prehistoric native Americans that Mills County had, a section of the gardens will include plants that this group of people used for food, shelter and clothing. The gardens will also include a children's garden where children may experience the excitement of plants and how they grow. A special section will depict our native plants with suggestions as to how they may be used in the local landscape as well as identification of the specimens. In May, a town meeting was held to introduce the concept to those living in Mills County, and to hear their ideas of what should be included in this project. These ideas were shared with a group of professionals including an architecture firm from Ft. Worth, the Governor's office on tourism, the LCRA, Texas historic commission and others. In the near future they will present composite plans for the complex and gardens. * Courtesy of Hazel McCoy ** Look for an update in the near future when reports are received Mills Co.
